An 84-year-old Canadian woman got the surprise of a lifetime when she discovered her long-lost diamond ring growing straight through a carrot in her vegetable patch.
Mary Grams lost the ring while weeding on her family farm in Alberta in 2004. Heartbroken, she decided to keep the loss a secret from everyone except her son. She even bought a slightly cheaper replacement ring and acted as if nothing had happened.
“I guess maybe I did the wrong thing, but you get so worked up,” Mary said.
The secret stayed hidden for more than ten years until her daughter-in-law, Colleen Daley, went to the garden for some fresh carrots. While washing a particularly lumpy carrot, she noticed something shiny. It was Mary’s diamond ring, perfectly preserved and threaded through the vegetable.
Her son immediately recognized the ring and called his mother. After thirteen years, the lost treasure was finally back in her hands.
Looking back, Mary said she wishes she had told her late husband, who passed away five years ago. “He was a joker,” she said. “He probably would have found this whole thing pretty funny.”
A simple day of harvesting vegetables turned into a heartwarming story of a ring that refused to stay lost and a carrot that held a thirteen-year secret.
